I want to help! Where do I start?

Digging in with the grassroots

Ask a grassroots leader how you can help and you may hear about canvassing, phonebanking, letters, postcards, organizing, mobilizing, backroom, messaging, voter registration, Swing Left, Indivisble, the DNC, CADEM, rallies, protests, etc. An enthusiastic leader may flood you with information and yet you still don't how to help.

The secret? Sign up and show up. Whether it’s a training, a seminar, a letter party, or a canvass, jump in. You’ll meet people, learn lingo, pick up new skills, and discover more ways to contribute. Chat with organizers and try a few groups until you find the right fit for your passions and talents.

Two suggestions for starting out:

1) Prepare letters to turn out voters in strategic down-ballot races.
2) Join a phone bank (these phone banks welcome newcomers and always offer training at all levels).

Ground Truth

Big Value in Hidden Gems!

Imagine a field of shiny, easy-to-find diamonds. Build a team and you can gather a lot of diamonds quickly. What if you need more gems and there's a neglected field next door? Amidst its rocks, bottle caps, shards of glass, clumps of grass, and withered cow pies you can find the occasional diamond. With focused effort, your team will unearth those gems.

Democrats do a decent job with the easy field, the one loaded with reliable supporters. Ground Truth digs into the neglected field and searches for the hidden gems, the voters who will support Democrats if we pay attention to them. Ground Truth volunteers plow that field, rooting through the glass, bottle caps, and cow pies to find the voters who need attention, the diamonds. Those valuable voters can flip elections.

Take Iowa's House District IA-01, for example. Democrats labeled over 200,000 of the district's voters as “unlikely supporters”, ignored them in 2024 and ultimately lost that election by fewer than 1,000 votes! Thousands more Iowans would have voted for the Democrat if someone had identified those supporters in that vast pool of unknown voters and turned them out at election time. That's Ground Truth's mission - find the gems amongst the unknown voters.

Let's be thoughtful about our donations. Our contributions have a lot more impact, say, by funding a local campaign rather than a U.S. Senate candidate.

It's important to know who we're donating to. Some PACS, for example, are more interested in enriching themselves than helpng Democrats win elections.

We've developed guidelines for you. They're based on our experience as donors, fundraisers and activists. We've learned from countless seminars and debriefs. We've run the guidelines by experts in small-dollar fundraising.

Political contributions are important! They amplify voices and fund staff, offices, and voter outreach. They help sustain essential year-round organizing.

Support Victory in California's CA-22!

April 28th Fundraiser features Dolores Huerta

We're partnering with Central Valley Matters and raising money for three community-organizing groups in California's CD-22. Our April 28th fundraiser, “Supporting Victory in the Central Valley (CD- 22)," features Dolores Huerta and commmunity leaders. They will update us on what's happening in their communities.

Donations given now allow these groups to hire and train staff, develop voter contact programs and prepare for the influx of volunteers that will come later in the election cycle.

Fresno Ground Truth Canvass

Saturday, April 25

We're heading to Fresno in the Central Valley, to California's 22nd Congressional District ("CA-22"). We're going to converse with people at the doors, in support of Ground Truth strategy of "listening to" rather than "talking at" voters

We'll hear the concerns of residents across the political spectrum and use this information to turn out voters for Democrats in the midterms.

Fundraiser for DVC's July Opening

Features U.S. Rep Sam Liccardo on May 2nd

Join the Democratic Volunteer Center (DVC) for an in-person event featuring local Congress member Sam Liccardo.

The DVC, based on the San Francisco Peninsula, provides space and resources to elect Democrats and pass legislation at the local, state, and national levels. The Democratic Volunteer Center is staffed by volunteers and funded through individuals' donations. This event helps the DVC pay for the space they'll lease for the 2026 election cycle.
